The Phillies were set to face off against the Red Sox at 1:10PM EST with Aaron Nola taking the mound. That will no longer be the case, as he joins three other Phillies on the COVID-related injured list. The team announced that along with Nola, Connor Brogdon, Bailey Falter, and Alec Bohm had also been placed on the list.
In corresponding moves, the Phillies called up Damon Jones, Nick Maton, Christopher Sanchez, and Mauricio Llovera from Lehigh Valley.
Two of those call-ups, Falter and Brogdon, saw action in Saturday’s 11-2 win, while Alec Bohm played in seven innings before facing an early exit due to COVID protocols.
Brandon Kintzler will be getting the start in place of Nola, which makes sense given the right-handed prowess on the Red Sox. Losing Nola is an obviously huge blow to the Phils, who are now 6-4 in their lost 10. Nola is 6-5 on the season with a .436 ERA.
It’s understandably concerning for fans who are finding this information out just 2 hours before the opening pitch, and it’s not the first time that the team has found itself in hot water with some COVID issues. It’s also unclear just how long each player will be sidelined, creating further unrest.
Here’s to hoping that the Phillies are able to get through the next couple of weeks relatively unscathed. They face Miami in a four game series next week before a brief double-header against the Yankees. After that, there should once again be some normality around the team.
