THE EAGLES MADE A TRADE…and it probably wasn’t the one you were expecting. Philly has parted ways with an undisclosed 2021 draft pick in exchange for DE Genard Avery. Okay, let’s break this down.

WHO?

Avery was a sixth-round rookie in 2018 who actually had a really productive season, registering 4.5 sacks and 40 tackles. This year, he’s been a healthy scratch for the majority of the season.

There’s no real reason for this, either, other than the fact that the Browns went from a 4-3 scheme where he played as an OLB, to a 4-2-5 where he’s a defensive end. This may have left Avery out in the cold and if there’s an area the Eagles need to strengthen, it’s linebacker.

During his time at Memphis, he registered 44.5 TFL and 21.5 sacks. The 6’1, 255 lbs, pass-rusher is clearly productive when penetrating the offensive line, but is that what he’ll be asked to do?

WHY?

There may be something else brewing here. If the Eagles are bringing him in as a defensive end, I’d expect there to be a knock-on effect that sees someone like Vinny Curry potentially moved. If they’re bringing him in at linebacker, that kind of says all you need to know.

Linebacker is a spot devoid of starting talent right now. Nigel Bradham is injured and Zach Brown was cut, leaving a very young and inexperienced group to carry the load.

Every reaction has a reaction and this doesn’t seem like a standalone move. Keep your eyes peeled, Howie’s cooking up something and it’s smelling juicy.
