In a bizarre twist of fate, the Eagles are releasing veteran cornerback Orlando Scandrick.

The 32-year old nickel cornerback spent the Summer with the Eagles and was released prior to final roster cuts. He was then brought back ahead of the clash with the New York Jets where he made a firm statement.

In just 35 of 59 snaps, Scandrick recorded 2 sacks, a forced-fumble, fumble recovery, and a touchdown. Sent on blitzes throughout the game, Scandrick proved to be a new nickel weapon to play with.

But after that stunning debut, Scandrick was nowhere to be seen. He played in 18 snaps one week later and against his former team, the Dallas Cowboys this happened

So, what does this mean?

Maybe this is Zach Brown 2.0. The Eagles saw another opportunity to make a statement to a locker room that looks to have plenty of problems that need solving. But that seems unlikely given that Scandrick was so focused on proving he belongs in the NFL at age 32.

But it could also mean that with Jalen Mills fully back and Ronald Darby on the edge, the Eagles are going to push Rasul Douglas or (unlikely) Sidney Jones to the nickel. It’s also worth noting that Cre’Von LeBlanc could well be on his way back soon, along with Avonte Maddox, so the excess depth would no longer be needed.

However, the more ‘exciting’ possibility is that that a bigger roster move is on the horizon and it’s one that could impact the secondary. Is it a trade for Chris Harris Jr as Gary Cobb oddly ‘guaranteed’? Who knows. But this could be the first raindrop to fall in what looks to be a storm of moves.
