“Ruin Tomorrow”, they used to call him. Everyone in Philadelphia always has their own opinions, but from 2012-2015 they could all agree on one thing. Even at 3 in the morning, Philadelphians could be heard yelling “I HATE RUBEN AMARO” and “I COULD DO A BETTER JOB”.
And then, suddenly, the complaining stopped. Ruben was out as General Manager and Matt Klentak was in. Ruben went to be the first base coach for the Boston Red Sox and everyone in Philadelphia had a slight chuckle.
But that feeling didn’t stop….
Until recently.
Ruben Amaro Jr. appeared as a guest cameo of the TV sit com The Goldbergs. It wasn’t just any cameo though. Ruben Amaro Jr. has been a character in The Goldbergs for 7 episodes (Yes 7!) with one catch. Ruben Amaro Jr. was played by Niko Guardado.
On the January 3rd episode “The Goldberg Girls” , Ruben Amaro Jr. made his acting debut on the show. We were all treated to something that warmed our hearts with a feeling we haven’t felt since 2011: happiness caused by Ruben Amaro Jr.
In his cameo, Amaro played none other than his late father Ruben Amaro Sr. and, in an interesting twist, Amaro had no power in his scene. He was basically told to sit down and shut (Matt Mullin’s words, not mine) up by Beverly Goldberg (played by Wendi McLendon-Covey).
It was a beautiful approximately 12 seconds of screen time that, for me, has healed all the old wounds and replaced them with (side) stiches from laughing at it so hard so many times.
You can watch the clip here and laugh to all your heart’s content.
….and let’s forget that he’s the first base for the New York Mets.
