Week nine was high-flying. There were blowouts, blown leads and everything in between. Here’s a look at how everyone did this week around MLS, week nine edition.
Toronto FC 2 Houston Dynamo 0
Toronto defended the 6 versus a tough Houston team to start off week nine. The home team made sure to get out to an early lead. Toronto scored in the 17th minute and the 32nd minute, both goals came from Jozy Altidore. After a bad first half from Houston, they pushed the envelope in the second. However it showed that the breaks were not going their way on this night. Toronto takes the crucial home three points, while Houston has to go back to Texas empty-handed.
Montreal Impact 1 Vancouver 2
Montreal started this Canadian rivalry game off by taking the early lead, scoring in the eighth minute. The rest of the match was all Vancouver. They found the equalizer in the 28th minute, off a beautiful volley. The match went on tied until the 78th minute where Vancouver found a way through on the counter to take the lead; it was one Montreal couldn’t come back from. Vancouver will gladly take the road points, while Montreal will hate that they lost an early lead at home.
Orlando City 2 Colorado Rapids 0
This 2017 season has shown two things Orlando City are pushing for the playoffs, and Colorado has fallen off a bit. For both these teams being in opposite directions, the game was fairly even. Colorado kept Orlando at bat for the first 3/4ths of the match, than Orlando woke up. A Carlos Rivas rocket, and a Kaka goal at the death sealed the match. Orlando will be thankful they pulled out the W, while Colorado will hate that they couldn’t contain the opposition in the last 15 minutes.
Columbus Crew 2 New York FC 3
This game was a true barn burner, and one Columbus will wish to have back. NYCFC opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Columbus countered twenty minutes later, and took the lead right after half time. Then NYCFC came back. They scored two goals in 13 minutes to secure the victory. NYCFC will take the tough road points, Columbus will hate that they blew a two goal lead at home.
New York Red Bulls 2 Chicago Fire 1
The return of Dax McCarty to Red Bull Arena didn’t go his way. Red Bull’s dominated and took the lead in the first half. Chicago did find the equalizer in the early in the second half. The end of the game was a stretch to see who could find that winning goal. NYRB found the winner on this day, thanks to Kemar Lawrence. The Red Bulls will love getting three points at home, while Chicago will be upset that they couldn’t win this one for Dax.
FC Dallas 2 Portland Timbers 2
These two western conference powerhouses met in Dallas, and both put on a show. Portland opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Dallas would answer 30 minutes later, unfortunately, the equalizer would only last them 10 minutes as Portland scored again. Dallas kept pushing and found the goal that solidified the share of the points. Dallas will be mad they let Portland dictate the game on their home turf, while Portland will be mad they couldn’t hold onto two different leads.
Minnesota United 0 San Jose Earthquakes 1
two teams pushing for success in the west met in week nine. Minnesota had the home field advantage but was pushed around by San Jose. They had chance after chance after chance. It took the Earthquakes 54 minutes to find the goal they needed. Minnesota did try to pull themselves back into the game after the goal but couldn’t find the equalizer. San Jose will love coming home with all three points, while Minnesota will fell down about losing at home.
Sporting Kansas City 3 Real Salt Lake 0
SKC put the rout on RSL. Kansas City started the scoring in the 17th minute, and didn’t look back. Dwyer doubled the lead in the second half, and SKC got a goal in second half stoppage time to complete the rout. RSL showed some attacking flair in the first half, but a disallowed goal seemed to kill all momentum. SKC will love getting three goals and three points at home, while RSL will have some explaining to do as to why thy gave up.
Seattle Sounders 3 New England Revolution 3
New England went into Seattle and took it to the Sounders. New England took the first 75 minutes of the game and scored three goals in Seattle. They were firing on all cylinders, and had a three goal lead, then they took their foot off the gas. In the last 15 minutes of the match, Seattle scored three goals, and dominated possession. The match ended in a very entertaining draw. Seattle will rally around their resilience of coming back, while New England will wonder why they stopped playing after the 75th minute mark.
LA Galaxy 0 Philadelphia Union 0
Philly took it’s hard times on the road to struggling LA. Both teams having not-so-ideal starts to 2017 shared the points in week nine. Philly’s plan seemed to be sit back, play defensive and try to counter. This worked defensively, but there was little going forward for Philly. LA tried to break through but couldn’t. This matches 0-0 result was enough to make all their fans go crazy.
Atlanta United 1 DC United 3
The most shocking result if the weekend came in an unexpected place, Atlanta. Atlanta has played very well at home all season, and started to do so week nine against DC. Atlanta opened the scoring in the eighth minute, but that seemed to wake up DC. DC United went on to dominate the rest of the game, scoring two goals in the first half and a third in the second half. Atlanta hardly showed up after the first 20 minutes. Atlanta will be wondering why they couldn’t hold their lead at home, while DC will gladly take the three points from Atlanta.
Here’s where all 22 teams stand after the ninth week of the 2017 season!
