With it being the end of July, hockey season is slowing approaching. For the Philadelphia Flyers, there is a bright future on the horizon as the rebuild is seemingly going uphill. This will be the first full season that Rick Tocchet will be the head coach of the orange and black. It will be a change not only with the players, but the culture in the locker room.

Flyers 2025 predictions

Matvei Michkov, who led all rookies in goals scored, will be playing his second season. This is another key assist that will highly benefit the team. Another huge move was the Flyers trading for Trevor Zegras who will add a lot of value offensively.

The only concern heading into the season is the goalie situation. While Sam Ersson has done a fine job in his role given the circumstances, he isn’t an official 1A. I suspect that next offseason, when the Flyers have more money to spend, they will go after a franchise goalie or at least a veteran goalie with a few years left.

When looking at the Metropolitan, which isn’t the strongest or toughest division, I still can’t see the Flyers surpassing teams like the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, and even teams like the Columbus Blue Jackets who got better this offseason. It’s too early to tell, but I don’t see Philadelphia making the playoffs. In all honestly it’s going to most likely be second to last or last place again. I do suspect this will be the last season the team misses the playoffs. When they are able to spend money on a goalie, and some of the prospects are ready to play in the NHL, then it will be a different ball game.

There is also a chance the Flyers end up surprising everyone. You would have to wonder if the Flyers are in playoff contention near the trade deadline whether or not Briere will make a trade for a goalie. There is always the possibility that Ersson has an incredible season. Another standout factor for the players to perform well is the Winter Olympics in February. There is a lot of what ifs heading into this season, but the direction is at least going uphill.
