The Phillies took the short trip up to Yankee Stadium for a three-game series this weekend. Philadelphia put on an offensive showcase over the first two games of the series before New York’s pitching earned the slim victory in the series finale. Let’s take a look back at the weekend in Phillies baseball as Taijuan Walker, Ranger Suarez, and Zack Wheeler took their turns in the rotation.

Game 1: Phillies 12, Yankees 5

Kyle Schwarber was 3-for-5 in the series opener, including a pair of two-run home runs that powered the Phillies to a 12-5 win in the series opener. Taijuan Walker allowed solo home runs to Cody Bellinger, Austin Wells, and Giancarlo Stanton but otherwise was excellent over 5.2 innings of baseball. Schwaber’s first home run tied the game at two in the fifth inning, but a two-out homer for Stanton in the bottom of the sixth put New York back on top, 3-2.

Philadelphia tied the game in the seventh after Trea Turner scored on a throwing error as Paul Goldschmidt’s rushed throw sailed past Wells to the backstop. J.T. Realmuto clobbered a three-run home run to left field to give Philly a 6-3 advantage.

New York scratched two runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning against Phillies reliever Jordan Romano. Anthony Volpe homered, while an Aaron Judge sacrifice fly scored Ben Rice from third for a 6-5 ballgame. The following day, Judge got an MRI for an elbow injury and would not return to the series.

In the eighth inning, Schwarber cracked his second two-run homer of the evening for an 8-5 advantage. Philadelphia tacked on three more runs in the ninth inning for the 12-5 win, their 59th of the year.

Game 2: Phillies 9, Yankees 4

On an atypical Saturday afternoon game, the Phillies used the momentum from the night before to establish an early lead en route to a 9-4 win. Realmuto’s single to left scored Trea Turner in the first inning, providing some early insurance for Suarez, who picked up his 8th win of the season following 5.2 innings.

Bryce Harper smacked a home run to right-center field in the third inning to double the Philly advantage, 2-0. Marcus Stroman walked Johan Rojas in the fourth inning for a 3-0 Phillies lead before Turner’s fielder’s choice allowed Max Kepler to score for a 4-0 lead.

New York responded on the scoreboard in the fourth as Jasson Dominguez singled to score Jazz Chisholm Jr. to cut the lead to 4-1, but Suarez stopped the Yankees right there by getting Trent Grisham to ground out to first base to end the inning.

With a 5-1 lead, Edmundo Sosa sent a two-run home run to center field to give the Phillies a 7-1 lead in the seventh. Schwarber’s double in the same inning put the final runs on the board for Philadelphia in the 9-4 win to reach the 60-win plateau on the season.

Game 3: Yankees 4, Phillies 3

As they did on Saturday afternoon, Philadelphia struck first on the scoreboard on Sunday afternoon. Nick Castellanos and Otto Kemp hit solo home runs to establish an early 2-0 advantage in the second inning off of Yankees starter Carlos Rodon

Unfortunately for the Phillies, Wheeler unraveled a bit in the second inning after allowing a single to Stanton, before hitting both Chisholm Jr. and Dominguez to load the bases for Ryan McMahon, who was acquired from the Colorado Rockies on Friday for a pair of pitching prospects. The new Yankees third baseman doubled to center, scoring two runs to tie the game at 2-2. Wells hit a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-2 advantage before Grisham singled to add a fourth run off Wheeler in the inning for a 4-2 Yankees lead.

Those were the only runs against Wheeler, but it was enough as the Phillies’ offense was limited to just five hits on the day. Kemp recorded his first multi-home run game of his MLB career with a solo homer to center field in the fifth inning.

Next Up – The Windy City

Philadelphia continues its second-half opening 21-game gauntlet against the American League with an early week three-game series against the Chicago White Sox. Here are the expected starting pitchers: Cristopher Sanchez (9-2, 2.40 ERA) vs. Davis Martin (2-8, 3.89 ERA) on Monday night, Jesus Luzardo (8-5, 4.58 ERA) vs. Jonathan Cannon (4-7, 4.48 ERA) on Tuesday night, and Walker (3-5, 3.84 ERA) vs. Adrian Houser (6-2, 2.10 ERA) on Wednesday afternoon. This will be the Phillies’ final series ahead of Thursday’s MLB trade deadline.
