On Tuesday afternoon, the Philadelphia Phillies announced that they have come to an agreement with their 1st overall pick of the 2025 MLB Draft. Right-handed pitcher Gage Wood signed for $3 million. He signed slightly under slot value of $3,492,000.
Phillies sign Gage Wood
Wood was drafted 26th overall out of the University of Arkansas. He features an explosive 98 MPH fastball that he pairs with a Reagan-era curveball. His electric stuff showed during the College World Series tournament. He became the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in 65 years in the CWS against Murray State. He struck out 19 hitters and missed a perfect game on a hit by pitch in the 8th inning.
Wood made just 10 starts during the 2025 season because of a shoulder impingement early in the season. In his 37.2 IP, Wood had a few noticeable career-best marks. He finished the season with a .903 WHIP, a 1.7 BB/9, and a 16.5 K/9.

For the first time officially as a Phillie, Gage Wood and his family visited Citizens Bank Park. From his account, it sounds like he got a warm welcome to the team. “Everyone is super nice, welcoming, and I didn’t really plan to expect that”, said Wood.
“He looks like he’s been in the weight room,” added Phillies Manager Rob Thomson on his first impression of Gage Wood.
He’ll start out his professional career with the Clearwater Threshers. As for what Phillies fan can expect from Wood, he said, “I’m going to work my butt off every day to get to this level. It’s going to be a journey.”
Wood became the Phillies’ 1st first-round selection out of college since Bryson Stott in 2019 and first college pitcher since Aaron Nola in 2014.
Later in the afternoon, the Phillies came to agreement with their 7th-round pick, Matthew Fisher. The Indiana Prep RHP set a new record for a 7th rounder, signing for $1.25 million, about $1 million over slot. He features a high spinrate fastball that reaches 95 MPH.
