The Philadelphia Phillies announced before Saturday’s contest that Alec Bohm has gone on the Injured List with a fractured left rib. Weston Wilson has been recalled from Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move.

Bohm down, Wilson back

Bohm, 28, was struck in the ribs by a 92-mph fastball courtesy of Yu Darvish on July 12. After sitting out the final game before the All-Star Break, Bohm returned to the Phillies’ lineup Friday against the Angels. He went 0-for-4 on the night, reporting some discomfort in his ribs. When Bohm reported on Saturday with the same discomfort, the Phillies determined it was time for Bohm to get it checked out. Hours later, a fractured rib became apparent, resulting in a trip to the injured list for the third baseman.

Meanwhile, up the Northeast extension, Weston Wilson was scratched from AAA Lehigh Valley’s game against Rochester. Wilson was optioned one month ago after appearing in 22 games for the Phillies, batting under the Mendoza line at .194. Wilson, who had options remaining on his contract, was optioned down to bring up Buddy Kennedy, who had utilized an upward mobility clause in his contract, essentially forcing the Phillies to bring him up in order to keep him. Not even two weeks later, Kennedy was designated for assignment.

In 25 games with Lehigh Valley this season, Wilson is batting .250 with three home runs. The super-utility will bring additional flexibility to the Phillies, likely getting some time at third base alongside Otto Kemp and Edmundo Sosa. Manager Rob Thomson specified pre-game that it would likely be a piecemeal operation at third base moving forward as they balance playing time for Kemp, Sosa, Bryson Stott, and now Wilson.

The battle rages against Anaheim

The Phillies will continue their series against the Angels Saturday night with a duel between Taijuan Walker and Yusei Kikuchi. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
