After taking care of business against the New York Red Bulls in a 2-0 victory at Subaru Park on Saturday night, the Philadelphia Union now look to kickstart another win streak that will improve their chances of lifting the Supporters Shield trophy at the end of the season in just a few months time.

Traveling to Chester midweek and looking to put a damper on those plans, a team the Union have lost to just twice in their previous 12 meetings, CF Montreal.

“We try to find ways to be hunters and not the hunted, and that’s the way we drive it internally.” – Head Coach Bradley Carnell

Head To Head

The 32 meetings between these two sides has been pretty evenly split over the course of the last 13 years or so, with each team having 11 wins and 10 draws to their name. Mikael Uhre leads all active goalscorer in this matchup with 5 goals in 7 games.

Recently, the Union have been the much more dominant side in this matchup, losing just 2 of the last 12 meetings with a 6W-4D-2L record during that span and outscoring Montreal by a total of 26 to 17.

In their previous matchup, Indiana Vassilev scored in the 2nd minute of the game, his first goal as a member of the Philadelphia Union. Montreal tied things up early in the 2nd half thanks to a goal by Giacomo Vrioni, but the Union would walk away with all 3 points after Mikael Uhre snuck one passed the Montreal keeper in the 84th minute on the road.

“We knew in the first game it wasn’t all “our way” and we had a lot of respect for them going into that game and nothing has changed since then because they’ve gotten better and they’re getting the results.” Bradley Carnell on Union’s 2-1 victory over Montreal earlier this season

CF Montreal’s Season So Far

Montreal got off to an awful start to the 2025 season, going winless in their first 11 games and sacking Head Coach Laurent Courtois before the end of March. Since then, Montreal have shown signs of improvement with a 3W-3D-5L in their previous 11 games. During that span however, Montreal have been outscored by a total of 12GF to 25GA, a sign of true fragility in their backline.

“Owusu has been dangerous in all phases of the game, in transition he can run behind, from crosses he is lethal, so that’s something we have to be aware about. And then they have some good rotations, they have some good players in the wide spots, Dante Sealy, who is always very dangerous.” – Bradley Carnell on Montreal’s attack

Union’s Season So Far

After their 2-0 win over the Red Bulls, the Philadelphia Union are once against sitting atop of the Eastern Conference and Supporters Shield standings with a 13W-4D-5L record and 43 points under their belt. The win against the Red Bulls broke a 2 game skid, the first losing streak since Bradley Carnell’s arrival in Philadelphia.

With 6 of the last 12 games of the season being played at home and a spot in the US Open Cup Semifinal on the line, Bradley Carnell’s team looks to be getting fit at just the right time in order to make a run at MULTIPLE trophies this season. Who thought we’d be saying that when we kicked off the season in February?

“We’re trying to keep it as humble as we can be and make sure that we approach our mentality in the right way and especially our actions” Bradley Carnell

Predicted Starting XI

Bradley Carnell gave an injury update prior to Wednesday’s match and it looks like the Union are getting close to full fitness with 12 games left in a Supporters Shield run. Jesús Bueno has been listed as Questionable for Wednesday night, with Ian Glavinovich, who has been out since April with a Torn Meniscus, being the only player ruled Out for the midweek contest.

“I think everyone is just about ready to go, bar Ian [Glavinovich], there’s a couple of question marks and we’ll wait til tomorrow to make a game-day decision on a couple of couples, but we’re training in the right way.”

“The way we started the game [against Red Bulls], the way we dominated, the way we started the first 45, if you think about a signature of stylistic video of play, this is the who we are and what we want to be, and we’re still trying to add one or two more layers to the complexity of how we do things” – Bradley Carnell on Union’s performance against Red Bulls
