Two rounds and two college pitchers taken by the Philadelphia Phillies as the club selected southpaw Cade Obermueller out of Iowa with the 63rd overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft as Brian Barber and the Phillies look to continue to bolster their farm system.
The Hawkeye has a side arm delivery with his slider being his best pitch. Here’s a quick scouting report on Obermueller from Baseball America:
Phillies pick Cade Obermueller
“A small and skinny lefthander with a 5-foot-11, 160-pound frame and sidearm slot, Obermueller primarily works off a two-pitch fastball/slider combo. He sits in the low 90s and gets up to 95 with a fastball that has sinking shape and has traditionally been a heavy groundball offering for him—though his groundball rate fell significantly from 2023 to 2024—and pairs the fastball with a 78-82 mph sweeping slider.
“Obermueller’s below-average control might ultimately push him back to the bullpen in pro ball.”
This season, he racked up 117 strikeouts while walking just 32 in 83.1 innings of work. He went 5-3 with a 3.02 ERA in 15 starts. In his collegiate career, he owned an 11-7 record with a respectable 3.60 ERA in 43 appearances with 40 being starts.
He was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 19th round in last year’s draft but declined to return to Iowa.
