The Philadelphia Flyers started the free agency period by adding some key depth pieces, though they surprised many by not offering a new deal to Jakob Pelletier. Pelletier chose to sign a three-year contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning instead.
On a positive note, the Flyers did extend an offer to defenseman Cam York, showing they still want to strengthen their defense pipeline.
New Players Joining the Flyers
Dan Vladař (Goalie)
The Flyers signed Vladař to a two-year contract worth $6.7 million total, averaging $3.35 million per season. Last year, Vladař recorded 12 wins with Calgary and now joins Philadelphia’s goaltending group. He’s expected to compete for the backup goalie spot behind Sam Errson despite Ivan Fedotov being vocal that he plans on reclaiming his spot next season.
Christian Dvorak (Forward)
Dvorak signed a one-year contract for $5.4 million. He’s a flexible forward who can play both center and left wing. Drafted by Arizona in 2014, Dvorak is known for his strong two-way game and should add depth and experience to the Flyers’ forward lines.
Lane Pederson (Forward)
Philadelphia also added Pederson on a one-year deal. He brings value in size and depth, which is going to benefit the team for this upcoming season.
Noah Juulsen (Defenseman)
Juulsen signed for one year at $900,000. A right-shot defenseman, Juulsen has played for several NHL teams, including Vancouver. He had surgery earlier this year but is expected to help the Flyers’ defense once healthy.
Dennis Gilbert (Defenseman)
Gilbert signed a one-year contract worth $875,000. He adds size and physicality to the Flyers’ defensive group.
What This Means for the Flyers
Most of these signings are focused on depth rather than big, headline-grabbing moves. The Flyers are dealing with a tight salary cap situation, so it’s unlikely they will make major signings for the rest of the offseason. However, next year’s free agency period looks like it will be more eventful for the team.
