The Philadelphia Flyers drafted four players in the second round. The team initially only had three picks, but a trade with Seattle gave them one more. The Flyers traded down two to get the 38th overall pick and moved up 11 spots giving Seattle their 68th pick, allowing them to pick at 57.
Get to know the Flyers rookies
With the 38th pick it was apparent that the Flyers knew who they were going to draft. Philadelphia selected Carter Amico. Amico is a 6’5 defenseman who shoots right. While he is a standout on the penalty kill, he stated that he wants to work on his puck game, which could mean something as simple as better puck control and possession. Amico is an enforcer who brings a lot of momentum to his game.
Philadelphia were on the clock for the 40th pick when they selected Jack Murtagh. The left winger stands at 6’1 and is heading to BU next season. Murtagh has a solid wrist shot and is a clean skater. When being asked about what he can bring to Philadelphia he stated, “I’m a high end workhorse with a good shot.”
At 48th overall, the Flyers drafted Shane Vansaghi. He’s a 6’2 right winger. Last season at Michigan State he posted 6 goals and 10 assists after 37 games. He’s a strong forechecker and brings a lot of physicality. Vansaghi wants to bring his grit and his enforcing abilities to the Flyers, and believes physical contact should be apart of the game since hockey is a contact sport.
The Flyers grafted another big body Matthew Gard at 57th overall. Gard is a Winnipeg native who stands at 6’5. Gard also has the ability to play left wing as well. He was a part of Team Canada’s 2025 IIHF U18 World Championship, and helped the team win gold. He does need to improve on his skating with quickness, but with his physicality he’s able to bring an element to the game that can’t be developed over time.
