It’s official. Despite the constant trade rumors surrounding the Philadelphia 76ers, the team ultimately decided to hold onto their pick, selecting VJ Edgecombe, a wing out of Baylor University.
Edgecombe averaged 15.0 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 2.1 steals last season, leading Baylor to the second round of the NCAA tournament, where they ultimately fell to Cooper Flagg and the Duke Blue Devils.
Long considered the favorite with the third pick, Edgecombe reportedly won over Philadelphia with his work ethic, personality and strong impression during his pre-draft interview.
While many Philadelphia fans clamored for a cleaner positional fit like Rutgers’ Ace Bailey, the Sixers are unrelenting believers in drafting the player they’ve identified as the best available. In this case, that player is VJ Edgecombe.
As a player, Edgecombe is not entirely unique compared to Philadelphia’s current roster. In terms of size and two-way archetype, Edgecombe is somewhat comparable to Sixers restricted free agent Quentin Grimes, though Grimes is far more advanced as a shooter and playmaker. Edgecombe’s athleticism and defensive prowess far exceed those of Grimes.
As a person, VJ Edgecombe is exactly the type of individual the Philadelphia 76ers have been building their culture with. A tireless worker, Edgecombe reportedly “made a strong impression” during his private workout with the Sixers, the only private workout he participated in, while also impressing in the meeting that followed.
In VJ Edgecombe, Philadelphia has a player dedicated to improving each and every day. One who matches the energy and personalities of young stars Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain.
