Rick Tocchet becomes Philadelphia Flyers’ 25th Franchise Head Coach

The Philadelphia Flyers announced Rick Tocchet as their 25th head coach in franchise history.

Flyers name Rick Tocchet as their new Head Coach

Flyers general manager Danny Briere stated, “During this process, it became clear that Rick was the absolute right coach to lead our team. He has enjoyed the highest level of success as a player and coach. Rick’s ability to teach and understand his players, combined with his passion for winning, brings out the best in young players at different stages of their development and has earned the respect and confidence of highly talented All-Stars and veteran players alike.” 

Flyers’ Present of Hockey Operations Keith Jones stated, “What is impressive about Rick is that players gravitate towards him and develop a strong relationship. There is a genuine trust that he will do everything he can to bring success to the team.”

Tocchet has been a head coach in the NHL for the past nine seasons, spending the past three seasons with the Vancouver Canucks. In the 2023-2024 season, Tocchet was awarded the Jack Adams award for coach of the year with Vancouver’s impressive 109 points. Tocchet was also an assistant coach for the Penguins and helped guide them in winning multiple Stanley Cups.

Tocchet is a former Flyer and holds the record for Flyers penalty minutes with 1,815. Tocchet played in 1,144 NHL regular-season games with the Flyers, Penguins, Kings, Bruins, Capitals, and Coyotes.
