Following the excitement of Monday night’s NBA Draft Lottery, which saw the Sixers land the third overall pick in the upcoming draft, the organization has now announced the promotion of a well-respected front office member.
According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Sixers are promoting Jameer Nelson to the position of assistant general manager.
Nelson joined the Sixers organization in 2020, becoming the assistant general manager of the team’s G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats. With Nelson in the front office, the Blue Coats saw a return to the postseason for the first time since the 2010-2011 season. The Blue Coats would go on to make the postseason in four of Nelson’s five years with the team, winning the G League Championship in 2023.
Many remember Nelson from his 14-year NBA career, highlighted by his memorable run as the starting point guard on the Dwight Howard-era Orlando Magic. Others may know Nelson as the Chester-area kid who thrilled crowds at Chester High School and Saint Joe’s. The Pennsylvania native continues his NBA journey, back in the big leagues with his hometown club.
By all accounts, as there has yet to be an additional move reported, Nelson will join Ned Cohen, who represented the Sixers as the drawing room representative at the NBA Draft Lottery, as an assistant GM.
