After their second consecutive clean sheet performance and 3-0 victory against DC United last weekend, Bradley Carnell and the Philadelphia Union will look to make it three straight wins in a meeting with CF Montreal north of the border on Saturday night.

The Union, looking to keep building on a strong 6W-1D-3L start to the season, will have to approach the weekend with their mid-week US Open Cup clash against Indy Eleven in mind. However, they must not overlook the task at hand on Saturday night—getting 3 points against Montreal.

“Your next game is your most important game, and then with the Open Cup, it’s four games to a final, and five games to a title. So, for sure, there are some exciting times and prospects and opportunities, and I think for each challenge and opportunity there [in front of you], I think we have to embrace it, I think we have to enjoy it. But like I said, that first challenge is Montreal.” – Union head Coach, Bradley Carnell

Head To Head

Montreal is one of the opponents the Union has faced the most in its history, facing off 31 times since 2012. In those 31 meetings, the Union has a record of 10W-10D-11L and has been outscored by 54 to 48.

In the previous 10 meetings across all competitions, however, Union has lost just twice against Montreal, collecting a combined record of 4W-4D-2L. Both losses came on the road for the Union, with their last win against Montreal north of the border coming back in 2022.

Montreal‘s Marco Di Vaio has four goals, the record for the most goals scored between the two clubs. Mikael Uhre’s four are among the most active players on either roster.

Montreal’s Season So Far

10 games into the 2025 MLS Season, and CF Montreal is still looking for its first campaign win. A record of 0W-3D-7L has them at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and above only the LA Galaxy in the Wooden Spoon race by goal differential alone.

CF Montreal, after a pretty underwhelming off-season, decided to fire Head Coach Laurent Courtois on March 24th. The club started the season with four losses and a draw through the first five weeks of the campaign.

Since then, Assistant Coach Marco Donadel has taken the reins in an attempt to establish some identity and stability for CF Montreal. Though Donadel and CF Montreal have yet to win in league play, they have played teams much tightly over recent weeks and beat Toronto FC on penalties in the Canadian Championship on Wednesday.

Union Predicted Starting XI

“Listen, I think it’s a tricky schedule for sure. I think nine gamespotentially nine games, eight guaranteed games and hopefully a 9th – in 31 days, so we’re going to need everybody on board and I think what we’ve been preaching since day one is sticking together and playing together, everybody has a chance and everybody’s been getting minutes, we use our subs a lot, guys have been coming back from a fitness point of view, so yeah, the bus is pretty full.” – Bradley Carnell on potential rotation with up-coming schedule congestion.

Formation: 4-2-2-2

GK: Blake
RB: Westfield, CB: Glesnes, CB: Harriel, LB: Wagner
CDM: Danley, CDM: Lukic

“Your next game is your most important game. Just from a psychological point of view, you want to put out there that you want to win your next game, and it’s 3 points on the line, and it’s a very important game. Yes, Indy Eleven, it’s no walkover next week, Wednesday, so you have to put full focus on that too. – Bradley Carnell.

“We said earlier, it’s four games to a final and it’s 5 to a title, but we can only speak about that after this weekend because its a tough trip, tough environment to go to and play at and they’re trending in the right direction, so for us all eyes are on Montreal and everybody has to be in the right mindset and right frame of mind to tackle the game the right way.” – Bradley Carnell.
