In the penultimate game of the 2024-2025 NBA season, the Sixers‘ tank is finally over as the team officially secured top-five odds for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft following a 124-110 loss to the Atlanta Hawks.

The Sixers returned to Philadelphia for a two-game stretch to wrap up their season. Facing the Atlanta Hawks, who, with a win, were set to clinch the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference, Philadelphia spent the first half putting on a legitimate show against the playoff team. That may sound like a low bar, but considering the team had just ended a 12-game losing streak, it was admittedly refreshing.

Early on, a larger part of Philadelphia’s success was thanks to Marcus Bagley. The brother of former No. 2 overall pick Marvin Bagley II, Marcus has spent effectively his entire career, since going undrafted in 2023, with the Sixers organization.

Having spent most of his time in Delaware with the 76ers’ G League affiliate, the Blue Coats, Bagley was brought up earlier this season on a series of 10-day contacts as the Sixers continued their search for playable bodies. Against the Hawks, Bagley looked like far more than just a body.

Going on a tear in the second quarter with four made threes and finishing his career night with 20 points (a career-high), 10 rebounds (a career-high), and five assists (yes, another career-high).

It was a heck of a game for the young Sixer, who is doing all he can to audition now for a larger role with a team, whether that be in Philadelphia or otherwise.

Another notable Sixer is Adem Bona, who continues to do the most in this final stretch of the season. Finishing the game with 18 points, six rebounds, and three blocks, Bona made a difference throughout the game and was consistent in punishing Atlanta’s bigs.

Bona has been a success story all season long, but especially in recent weeks, as his role and ability have both grown significantly.

Sixers standings update

This is what we have all been waiting for. The Sixers’ tank has realized its mission, maximizing its draft position and officially clinching top-five odds at the top pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

No longer must Sixers fans worry about the Brooklyn Nets surpassing them—at least until May 12th. There is no more need for tanking talk, and finally, the Sixers will be able to play a game without a care one way or another on Sunday, April 13.

Now, all that’s left to do is figure out where you’ll be on May 12th for the draft lottery. Those looking to hang out with the PSN crew that evening are looking for some details on our upcoming draft lottery party.

Up next for the Sixers

The Sixers will remain home for their season finale to face the Chicago Bulls. Coming off of what looks to be a win at the half, the Bulls will likely not need to win, as they should be locked into the ninth seed in the play-in tournament. Time will tell whether the Bulls decide to rest their vets or plan to win in hopes of keeping their team hot.

Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, and you can catch the game on NBC Sports Philadelphia or listen live as always at 97.5 The Fanatic FM.
