The Philadelphia Flyers fired John Tortorella as head coach on Thursday morning. The move comes after a dismal run of form that has seen the team go 1-8-1 over its last 10 games, dropping 6 in a row, 5 in regulation.
Flyers part ways with Tortorella
Tortorella spent close to 3 seasons in Philadelphia and while this one finally looked to show signs of promise, the team is languishing at the bottom of the Metropolitan division.
Danny Briere said he had to make the difficult decision to part ways with Tortorella. Briere stated, “John played a vital role in our rebuild. He set a standard of play and re-established what it means to be a Philadelphia Flyer. John’s passion on the bench was only equaled by his charitable work in our community. As we move into the next chapter of this rebuild, I felt this was the best for our team to move forward. I want to thank John for his tireless work and commitment to the Flyers.”
Brad Shaw will serve as the interim head coach. Shaw joined the Flyers’ coaching staff in July 2022 and has been involved with the team’s successful penalty-kill unit. Shaw served as an assistant coach for Canucks, Blue Jackets, and Blues, and he was also a part of the Islanders coaching staff.
Danny Briere will discuss the coaching change with the media before tonight’s contest against the Canadians, and Brad Shaw will discuss it post-game.
