Amazingly, the Philadelphia Phillies are past the halfway point of the Spring Training calendar, which wraps up in two weeks. The Phillies will have a three-game series in Washington before their first homestand of the season—three games against Colorado and three contests with the reigning World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It is mid-March, and there are still two weeks of Florida baseball to play for players who have survived the early roster cuts. With that in mind, let’s look at the “Phillies By Numbers” over the first half of the Grapefruit League schedule.
– The Phillies ended one game in a deadlock on the scoreboard this spring, a 7-7 draw against the Yankees on Feb. 27. The Phillies jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a Johan Rojas two-run HR in the second inning. New York’s Anthony Volpe smacked his own two-run HR in the third inning to tie the game. The Phillies entered the bottom of the 9th trailing 7-6 before Yankees pitching gifted the tie with a hit by pitch (Oscar Mercado) followed by three straight walks. Infielder Carson DeMartini struck out with the bases loaded to end the game deadlocked at seven.
– Three Phillies are tied for the spring lead in home runs with three HRs each as Gabriel Rincones, Buddy Kennedy, and Alec Bohm share the lead in the category (as of March 12). The highest-profile name on the list, Bohm, finished with 15 HRs in 143 games last season. Rincones has flashed on the scene this spring, but “Uncle Rico” was recently moved to minor league camp. Buddy Kennedy made Phillies fans fall in love last summer after drawing a walk in a high-pressure situation of a 2-1 Phillies win last August. The Millville, NJ native hopes to land a spot in the 2025 Phillies Opening Day roster.
– Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins has whacked five home runs this spring(as of March 11). The long-time Phillies infielder is tied for second-best in the MLB during the first half of Spring Training. In eight games for the Brewers, Hoskins is batting .350 with seven hits, five home runs, six RBIs, and nine runs scored. The 31-year-old MLB veteran is tied with his 28-year-old teammate, Vinny Capra, who is batting an equally impressive .320 with eight hits, five home runs, 12 RBIs, and nine runs scored in 12 games. Boston’s Trayce Thompson has smacked six HRs in 12 games, leading the MLB during Grapefruit League play.
– The even number of wins and losses the Phillies have after 16 spring games. Philadelphia sits at a .500 record as players start to get into a baseball rhythm in March. It’s been streaky for Philly this spring. After allowing 42 runs and losing five straight games between March 2 and 7, the Phillies rebounded with four consecutive wins as the pitching allowed 15 runs in a four-game span between March 8 and 11, capped off by a massive 18-run offensive outburst by the Phillies against Boston.
— Bryce Harper‘s ranking on MLB.com’s first Hitter Power Rankings of 2025. Yankees slugger Aaron Judge tops the list, followed by the Dodgers Shohei Ohtani and the Mets outfielder Juan Soto. Harper sits ahead of Kyle Tucker, an offseason addition for the Chicago Cubs. Harper finished with 30 HRs last season for Philly. The Phanatic-loving superstar has averaged 35 HRs a season over the last four seasons. Kyle Schwarber received no votes despite an average of 43 HRs per year over his three campaigns as a Phillies power bat.

– Clubhouse leader in strikeouts (as of March 12) for the Philadelphia pitching staff, Jose Alvarado and Cristopher Sanchez. Alvarado, an important bullpen piece, has tossed five cleaning innings this spring with 12 strikeouts and three walks. Meanwhile, Sanchez looks to solidify his role in the starting rotation with 12 strikeouts and one walk over 7.2 innings of work in Florida. Sanchez represented the Phillies in the All-Star game last July.
– Home runs needed by Bryce Harper for 350 career round-trippers entering his 14th season of MLB duty. Harper smashed 184 home runs over his first seven years in Washington while bashing 152 HRs over six years in red pinstripes for Philly. Several MLB stars are chasing the accomplishment this season – the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman (343 HR), Padres’ Manny Machado (342), Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado (341), and Gaurdians’ Carlos Santana (324) are within reach of the mark during the 2025 MLB season. Free agent J.D. Martinez (331) needs a contract before he can swing for the milestone.
– Phillies prospect Andrew Painter is working his way back from Tommy John‘s surgery in July 2023. The 6-foot-7 righty ranks as one of the MLB’s 10 best prospects despite being out of action for over a year. Painter shined in the Arizona Fall League with a 2.30 earned runs average in 15.2 innings of work. Phillies GM Dave Dombrowski expects Painter to make his MLB debut this summer. “I’ve said all along July-ish, and I don’t know if that means June or August,” Dombrowski said. “We want to build him up and not burn him too early in the year.”
– Bryce Harper needs 24 RBIs to reach 1,000 career RBIs. He enters the season with 976 RBIs, including 455 RBIs in six seasons in Philadelphia. Harper would be the 306th MLB player to reach the milestone if he is the first one to accomplish the milestone this season. Two other MLB stars will be able to chase 1,000 career RBIs this season – the Yankees Anthony Rizzo (965 RBIs) and the Angels Mike Trout (954). Free Agent Jose Abreu (960) must land with a team this season before proceeding on his RBI quest.

– The Phillies were credited with 34 RBIs of the 39 runs scored over the four-game winning streak from March 8 to 11. The Phillies were credited with RBIs on all five occasions in the 5-4 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on March 8. The next day, Philly scored three unearned runs in a 12-2 beatdown over Baltimore, with six different Phillies credited with driving in runs. On March 10, Philly hitters drove in all four runs of a 4-1 victory over Minnesota, followed by an 18-8 win over Boston. Twelve different Phillies secured a spring training RBI in the win over the Red Sox, with Buddy Kennedy leading the Phillies with 3 RBIs on the afternoon.
