With just over a week until the start of the 2025 MLS season, the Philadelphia Union have unveiled their new ‘Voltage Kit’, which will act as the team’s secondary uniform for the upcoming year.
Philadelphia Union Voltage Kit Design
In a similar style to the fan-favorite ‘Lightning Kits’ the Union wore during their trip to the 2022 MLS Cup Final, the ‘Voltage Kits‘ sport a light-blue base color with electric-yellow bolts that flash across the chest, colors drawn from the Pennsylvania state flag, and an pattern representing the passion and resilience of the Union and the city of Philadelphia.
The snake emblem and ADIDAS logo on either side of the chest add a nice contrast to the light-colored kit with a dark blue, textured finish. In a similar dark-blue color, an Independence Blue Cross (IBX) logo on the sleeve and a Thomas, a Bimbo Bakeries USA Brand logo on the front complete the Voltage kit design that Union will wear in 2025. Based on the promo material Union has released, the team will wear electric-yellow shorts and light-blue socks with the ‘Voltage Kit.’
The lighting pattern, which looks to be the same on every shirt based on the team’s promo photos, is meant to represent the Union’s dynamic, fast-paced presence on the field, which we know is going to have a revamped look under Bradley Carnell in 2025.
“It embodies the energy, passion, and unpredictability that define both the team and Philadelphia. Inspired by the raw power of lightning, the kit symbolizes the spark behind every goal, pass, and moment of brilliance. Its sharp lines and bold flashes echo both the speed of a lightning strike and the creative energy of Philadelphia.” – Union Director of Marketing, Sam Leybman
Thoughts on the Voltage Kit
Overall, I think this is a pretty solid kit. The light blue and yellow worked so well with the Lightning Kits and obviously brought a lot of joy to Union fans during 2022, so I don’t mind the team bringing that color scheme back in 2025.
I like a light-colored Secondary kit much better than a mostly-white one, so I’m happy with that, and I’m glad Union didn’t elect to go with something a little more template-y while going with a theme they know has seen success in the past.
I don’t have many gripes with this kit, but I do wish that the lightning patterns were different on every shirt, as you see with some patterned jerseys these days, but it’s not a huge deal. And I know sponsors are just a part of soccer jerseys, but this shirt would look so much better without one. That said, I take gratitude in the sponsor logo matching the jersey’s color scheme at least.
The one thing I definitely don’t like, however, is the price tag. $149 for an “authentic” soccer shirt with no name on it is outrageous. $99 for the replica is a bit of an easier price to swallow, but again – that’s without a name or number on the back. A replica kit with name and number will run you $139, with authentic kits with name and numbers going for $194. That’s almost 1/4-1/5 of what a lot of teams charge for season tickets in supporters sections!
Voltage Kit Launch Event
The Philadelphia Union will be holding a ‘Voltage Kit’ launch event on Saturday, February 15th, from 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm at Subaru Park. The event will be the first time fans can see the new ‘Voltage Kit’ and all its details in person and will include a series of engaging, electricity-themed activities like Tesla coil displays, glow-in-the-dark airbrush tattoos, and an electrifying performance by ArcAttack; he is leading expert in modern high voltage performance art and installation.
