The Philadelphia Flyers played their worst game of the season in the 6-1 loss to the New York Rangers. This loss sets in a major reality check to where this team truly is. The Flyers have the potential to be a decent team, but when push comes to shove, they can’t get the job done.
The race in the East is close. The Flyers have 50 points right now and are within two games of being the second wild-card team. The only problem for Philadelphia is that five other teams are in the same position. This has to be the closest to the standings of all Eastern teams. Despite having a rocky season, the Rangers are in the mix of the five teams as well.
Should the Flyers be buyers or sellers?
While it’s understandable that fans want to see their team advance to the playoffs, this may not work. Philadelphia could well wind end up as a middle-of-the-pack team and receive a lesser draft pick. This might be a negative way to look at the season, but it’s the harsh reality.
Another reality that the franchise has to face is the lack of money. The cap space for the Flyers right now is $3,242,838. This isn’t enough money to sign a franchise goalie or add other valuable assets. This is why the Flyers need to be sellers at the deadline. Not only to free up space but to spruce up the roster.
Some players rumored to be traded from Philadelphia are Morgan Frost, Joel Farabee, and Scott Laughton. While these are all rumors, it is known that the Flyers did try to move Laughton during the trade deadline last season but couldn’t get interested in what they wanted in return.
Being nearly a month from the March 7th trade deadline, it’s important to remember that the next few weeks of Flyers hockey will determine the decision Flyers general manager Danny Briere will make. There also might be a possibility that the team don’t do anything significant if they have more consistent wins.
