The Philadelphia 76ers, the National Basketball Association (NBA), and Comcast Spectacor have agreed to keep the iconic basketball franchise in South Philadelphia for the foreseeable future. Philly has been a tenant of the Comcast Spectacor-owned Wells Fargo Center since the building opened in 1996 alongside the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Philadelphia Flyers, also owned by Comcast Spectacor.

Despite all the negotiations and public backing by the City of Philadelphia, 76 Place at Market East will remain a dream for project supporters. Last month, the Philadelphia City Council voted in favor of an initial approval of a Center City-based arena. One month later, it appears all of those discussions have been abandoned.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Comcast has presented an agreeable plan to redevelop the South Philadelphia Sports District to keep the basketball franchise in South Philly. The mayor’s office is expected to comment tomorrow — more details to come on this developing story.
