The Philadelphia Phillies continued their roster reconstruction on Sunday morning with a reported trade with division-rival Miami. According to Matt Gelb of The Athletic, Philadelphia is acquiring left-handed starter Jesus Luzardo and catcher Paul McIntosh from the Miami Marlins in exchange for a pair of prospects: Starlyn Caba and Emaarion Boyd. The trade provides additional depth to a pitching rotation, providing a new lefty option for Rob Thompson’s lineup card while allowing top pitching prospect Andrew Painter to marinate in the minors into next summer.

Phillies make a deal

Luzardo, 27, comes to Philly with some injury concerns after 12 starts in 2024 for Miami after a career season in 2023 with a 3.58 ERA over almost 180 innings.  The MLB veteran is 26-34 with a 4.29 ERA and 559 strikeouts in 512.0 innings pitched during his six-year career with mostly underperforming teams in Oakland and Miami. The southpaw hurler has two seasons of club control remaining, which could open up the potential of trading away Ranger Suarez, who is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent after next season. McIntosh, 27, has not played an MLB game in his career.

Starlyn Caba, 19, had a limited road map to a crowded infield picture in Philadelphia despite being one of the more talented pieces in the minors. According to MLB.com, Caba was ranked as the fourth-best Phillies prospect but is projected to be at least 3-more years away from MLB ready. Emaarion Boyd, 21, is an outfield in A-ball selected in the 11th round of the 2022 MLB draft by the Phillies.
