The Philadelphia Eagles have made their second move in as many days to try and negate the season-ending loss of Brandon Graham. The team announced on Tuesday evening that it has claimed DE Charles Harris off waivers.
Who is Charles Harris?
Harris was a first-round pick of the Miami Dolphins back in 2017 but he didn’t develop as many first hoped. After he left Miami in 2020, he’s played for 3 different teams, posting a career-year in 2021 where he had 7.5 sacks, 16 QB hits, and 10 tackles for loss along with 2 passes defensed for the Falcons.
After a two-year stint with the Lions, Harris sat on the open market for the entire 2024 offseason, having registered 16.5 sacks and 53 QB hits over his seven-year career.
That was until September when Carolina came knocking for depth. He played in 9 games for the Panthers (starting 6) after signing with them at the dawn on the new season, posting a respectful 3 sacks (team-leading) and 7 QB hits. However, with D.J Wonnum returning from IR and a need for secondary help, he was waived on Monday… and the Eagles jumped straight in to acquire his services.
Fit with the Eagles
While Harris is hardly the most stout run defender there is, he has shown a knack to bring pressure off the edge throughout his NFL career. It’s not like the Eagles need him to start. Nolan Smith and Jalyx Hunt are likely to see an uptick in snaps and that means that a rotational role for a veteran who has proven himself this season as an efficient pass-rusher is the ideal solution given the trade deadline has already passed and options are limited.
