The Philadelphia Eagles are now riding a six-game win streak with hopes of clinching another NFC East title. perhaps the biggest catalyst in their recent run of form has been the incredible play of running back Saquon Barkley, who has soared to the top of the odds list when it comes to the AP Offensive Player of the Year Award.
The Penn State product was controversially let go by the Giants this offseason and it didn’t take him long to journey down the I-95 to his new home in Philadelphia. After years of being the lone bright spot in a dismal Giants team, he’s now perhaps the brightest star on one of the strongest teams in the entire conference.
NFL Offensive Player of the Year Odds: Saquon Barkley is setting the standard
Saquon Barkley | +105 |
Derrick Henry | +140 |
Ja’Marr Chase | +500 |
Lamar Jackson | +1400 |
Justin Jefferson | +1800 |
Saquon Barkley is not only on pace to set the single-season franchise rushing record, but is second only to Baltimore’s Derrick Henry in rushing yards this season with 1,137. While he ‘only’ has 8 touchdowns in comparison to Henry’s 13, this number would be much higher if the team pushed Barkley into the end zone instead of Jalen Hurts on the infamous ‘tush push’ play. Oh, and he’s averaging a dominant 5.8 yards per carry.
The other element Barkley brings to the table is something Henry lacks – receiving prowess. With 210 yards and a further 2 touchdowns through the air, the former Giant has more total scrimmage yards than Henry and actually leads the entire league in that metric.
No Eagles player has ever actually won the AP Offensive Player of the Year award, and Barkley winning this accolade would just put another Cherry on what is already a simply incredible Cake. The superstar running back is defying expectations with each passing carry, and the fact that he’s behind Derrick Henry in rushing yards and total touchdowns yet still favored to win the award says all you need to know.
