On Tuesday at 6 pm, Major League Baseball teams had to finalize their 40-man rosters. This is to establish the player pool for the Rule 5 Draft in December. The Phillies decided to add three of their prospects to the roster, while removing a player they had just claimed earlier in the month.

The Phillies Announce Moves

The Phillies added their 2020 1st round pick Mick Abel to the 40-man roster. Abel struggled in Triple-A in 2024, recording a 6.46 ERA. He’s the 6th best prospect in the Phillies’ minor league system according to MLB.com. He still features strikeout stuff. While he has work to do, Abel is still just 23 years old.

Moisés Chace has also been added to the 40-man roster. He was acquired at the trade deadline with Seth Johnson for Gregory Soto in a swap with the Orioles. He impressed at Double-A Reading with a 3.66 ERA in 19.2 IP. He recorded an eye-popping 16 K/9 in that span, including a 13-strikeout performance: the most by a Reading pitcher since 2001. He is just 21 years old.

Jean Cabrera is also protected from the Rule 5 Draft. He had an excellent start of the season in High-A Jersey Shore, posting a 3.39 ERA in 77 IP. He struggled a bit in his promotion to Reading. He’s listed at just 6 feet tall and 145 pounds. He turned 23 in October.

John McMillion cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He spent time between the Marlins and Royals’ organizations in 2024. The Phillies had claimed him on waivers in early November.

The Phillies 40-man roster sits at 39 players after the moves.
