The Philadelphia Flyers returned home after their road trip to host the San Jose Sharks on Military appreciation night. The Flyers were without Jamie Drysdale, who’s on IR with an upper-body injury, and Morgan Frost, who was healthy scratched.

The game began after a ceremonial puck drop featuring Josh Chilcote and his service dog Turbo.

Flyers vs Sharks recap

With only a minute and 40 seconds having passed, Erik Johnson, who reentered the lineup, made his presence known by scoring an early goal. However, following the goal, Johnson found himself fighting Givani Smith. However, the fight was justified as Smith went after Matvei Michkov on the faceoff. However, for the Flyers, Travis Konency scored in their second power play of the contest. This was Konecny’s fifth power-play goal of the season, increasing the Flyers’ lead 2-0 after 20 minutes.

Michkov scored his first five-on-five goal early in the second frame. It was written in the stars that Michkov would make a positive impact after being healthy and scratched for the past two games. Philadelphia had a 3-0 lead after 25 minutes of play. However, the lead was quickly cut short. Jack Thompson scored 10 minutes after Michkov’s goal. The Sharks cut the Flyers’ three-goal lead to two. However, it became a one-goal game after Mikael Granlund got the puck past Sam Ersson. The Flyers’ 3-0 lead quickly transformed into a 3-2 lead.

While there was much back-and-forth in the final frame, the Sharks were the lone goal scorers as Barclay Goodrow tied the contest 3-3. The Flyers played like a dominant team and returned to sloppy turnovers and mishaps. The contest went to extra minutes, but in good old Flyers fashion, it was up to a shootout to determine the winner. Michkov and Konencny were the goal scorers in the shootout, and Philadelphia could win 4-3.

After the game, Michkov commented, “If Travis says it, I’ll keep it!” When it comes to Konenecy complimenting the small details of Michkov’s game. It’s no real surprise that the two work well together with both of their work ethics. Konency stated, “You can feel it coming,” regarding the team’s identity.

Though it’s a frustrating win, as the Flyers did hold a 3-0 lead that quickly disappeared, they found a way to win. While there’s an argument to make that this was a bad win, it shows that this team doesn’t give up even when it looks like it’s over. The Flyers have an off day today and practice Wednesday before heading to Ottawa to take on former Flyers captain Claude Giroux and the Senators.
