What to watch
To say that the Sixers have been underwhelming in their first month of the regular season would be putting it mildly. With a dismal 1-6 record and their sole win to date coming in overtime against Indiana, the Sixers have the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
Most of their losses to date have been marked by the absence of superstars Joel Embiid and Paul George, and while George has returned to action, Embiid’s absence had been extended by a three-game suspension following his altercation with a reporter. Now, with Tyrese Maxey expected to miss at least two weeks with a hamstring injury, the Sixers just can’t seem to catch a break.
But all hope is not lost. The Sixers have played fairly well against some playoff-caliber teams, such as the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns, especially once you consider the absence of two of their top players.
New additions such as Caleb Martin and Guerschon Yabusele have put up an extraordinary effort physically, with the latter averaging 8.4 points (plus nearly 38% from three), 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists, and one block in less than 20 minutes a night. And while the team as a whole still needs to work on fighting for rebounds – especially defensively – they’re actually averaging more offensive rebounds per game (11.7) than they were through the first seven games of last season (10.9).
Continuing on that rebounding trend will be essential against the Lakers, particularly if Anthony Davis is out or on a minutes restriction. With Maxey out for the time being, it is now time for guards like Jared McCain, Eric Gordon, and perhaps even Reggie Jackson to step in and be the difference maker this team needs.
