The Philadelphia Flyers fell short of the mark against the Carolina Hurricanes in last night’s contest, but the team made some excellent strides. The Hurricanes are taking the league by storm, having secured their seventh straight win after defeating Philadelphia 6-4.

The Flyers were missing Ryan Poehling, who bench boss John Tortorella said was dealing with personal and family issues. Last night Egor Zamula was back in the lineup and was paired with Emil Andrae, which was underwhelming and possibly one of the worst pairings Philadelphia put together this season. With Sam Ersson being out due to a lower-body injury, the Flyers started Kolosov in the net with Fedotov backing him.

Flyers Lines and pairs:

Tyson Foerster — Sean Couturier — Matvei Michkov
Owen Tippett — Morgan Frost — Travis Konecny
Joel Farabee — Scott Laughton — Bobby Brink
Nicolas Deslauriers — Noah Cates — Garnet Hathaway

Travis Sanheim — Rasmus Ristolainen
Nick Seeler — Jamie Drysdale
Emil Andrae — Egor Zamula

Aleksei Kolosov
Ivan Fedotov

First period

In the first frame, Travis Konecny picked up his 6th goal of the season on a 5-3 man advantage. Philadelphia has scored nine power-play goals so far this season, an improvement from where they were last season. However, the lead lasted briefly as Carolina’s Jackson Blake tied up the contest. Unfortunately, the Andrae and Zamula pairing was on the ice for Blake’s goal and needed help properly protecting the net. Kolosov was extremely sharp, but those types of plays happen.

Second period

The second frame was dominated mainly by the Hurricanes. While there was no scoring until the halfway mark, Carolina did a good job of tiring out a struggling Philadelphia team. Both Eric Robinson and Jordan Martinook scored for the Canes. For Martinook’s goal, it was Andrae and Zamula’s pair on the ice, which drew frustration due to the lack of positioning, as they did on Blake’s goal. With both goals separated by a little over a minute, the momentum shift to Carolina was visible. However, Owen Tippett made it a one-goal game 3-2.

Third period

Heading into the final frame included a lot of scoring. Morgan Frost had a weird goal as the puck deflected off of his skate. This feels very on-brand for Frost and his goals, especially considering how lucky they can be at times.

The lead quickly went to a tie, but that didn’t last long, with Jack Roslovic scoring not even a minute later. Travis Konecny replied halfway through the final frame, giving the Flyers life again as he scored the 8th goal of the game. As the two teams were on the verge of overtime hockey, Martin Necas scored with 31 seconds remaining. Philadelphia pulled Kolosov, hoping to tie up the contest again, but was unsuccessful as Seth Jarvis scored an empty netter.

Despite the efforts, Philadelphia fell 6-4, with Kolosov making 28 saves. Tortorella kept his postgame media availability to only 25 seconds and was visibly frustrated with the game’s outcome.
