The Philadelphia Flyers made history with a regulation win in Boston, a feat not achieved in 13 years. The last time the Flyers defeated the Bruins in regulation was October 6th, 2011. Not only was this contest a great battle, but it also showed the team’s resilience when facing adversity, with the team looking disconnected.
This victory was a shutout for Sam Ersson, who stopped all 23 shots on net, marking a significant milestone. Tyson Foerster and Joel Farabee scored the two goals that sealed the victory. Another highlight of the game was defenseman Emil Andrae earning his first NHL point with an assist on Foerster’s goal.
With the contest’s outcome thrilling, Boston’s goalie, Joonas Korpisalo, had a fantastic game. He saved 17 out of 18 shots on goal. Both Ersson and Korpisalo were the real stars of the contest with their incredible saves. Ersson was diving all over, and without his fast reflexes, the contest would have had a much different result due to Boston’s aggressiveness around the net.
In the first frame, the game remained scoreless. Both teams had ten shots on goal. However, it was a back-and-forth battle in which both teams offensively generated plays but couldn’t get the puck past the netminders. Tyson Foerster got the Flyers on the board five minutes into the second period. This is Foerster’s second goal since the season opener in Vancouver. Even though the Flyers had the one-goal lead, it didn’t give Philadelphia security as the battle between the two teams remained close with their play.
The final frame mimicked the first 40 minutes, with both teams generating good opportunities, but the goalies stepped up. Finally, with around 30 seconds remaining on the clock, Farabee got an empty netter to solidify the win in Boston.
The Flyers also had their annual “moms trip,” which could have helped the players regain some of their confidence. However, bench boss John Tortorella was happy with the win. Tortorella never seemed to panic when the orange and black couldn’t find victories throughout the early start of the season. Philadelphia is also not in last place in the Metropolitan anymore, as the other Pennsylvania team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, took that spot.
The Flyers, who are now 3-6-1, prepare to take on the St. Louis Blues Thursday night, who fell to the Senators 8-1 in their battle last night. The Flyers have an off day today but have a morning skate on Thursday.
