The Philadelphia Flyers (1-3-1) opponent for the next two regular season games are the Metro Division rival Washington Capitals (3-1-0) – The first battle in the mini-series takes place at Wells Fargo Center in Philly tomorrow night. On Saturday, the Capitals traveled up to Newark, New Jersey beating the Devils 6–5 in overtime. Naturally, the team stayed in the area with a contest pending against Philadelphia.
Flyers host Ovechkin & Capitals in practice
On Tuesday afternoon, the Flyers opponent for tomorrow night skated on one of the two currently available rinks at Flyers Training Center in Voorhees, New Jersey. Lucky Flyers fans arriving for Philly’s public morning practice were treated to a training session featuring one of the best hockey players in the world, Alex Ovechkin. The 39-year-old superstar needs 41 goals to set a new NHL record for most all-time regular season goals passing Wayne Gretkzy’s 894 goals. Ovechkin has scored once this year in Washington’s four games.
Randell, a fan inside the Flyers Training Center, brought a homemade sign asking for a picture with Ovechkin. A less than enthusiastic response indicated he didn’t receive the desired photo opportunity. Still, you got to shoot your SHOOT! your shots when you can, right? Good on you, Randell.
Philadelphia took their main sheet of ice at the Flyers Training Center around noon following the completion of Washington’s 11 am practice on the secondary rink. Both teams trained for about an hour with some players lingering longer than others before the upcoming energy-sucking two-game gauntlet. The Flyers and the Capitals worked on their special teams units (power play and penalty kill) and fine-tuning some defensive basics. It was fascinating to see both teams work on similar basics in the early season.
John Tortorella’s Philadelphia Flyers are in for a fight against Spencer Carburry’s Washington Capitals. The teams have trended in opposite directions since the start of the 2024–25 NHL season. Philly scored the overtime win in the first game of the season before suffering losses in the next four contests. Washington lost at home on opening night before rolling off three straight wins. The Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals drop the puck for the first game of the home-and-home series tomorrow at 7 PM in South Philadelphia.
