Sixers star Tyrese Maxey has a passion for giving back to the community. On Thursday, Maxey was recognized for his efforts, being named the winner of the Bob Lanier Community Assist Award for the 2024 offseason.
Over the summer, Maxey, alongside his self-titled foundation, launched the inaugural Tyrese Maxey Foundation Friends and Family Weekend in Philadelphia. Featuring a free basketball camp for youth ages 7-12, Maxey’s 1% Better Skills Camp featured skills training, giveaways, and lunch with Maxey.
Maxey also announced two scholarships to give students the support needed to pursue their academic endeavors, as is the event’s mission. According to the Sixers, he also committed to donating $1 million to Philadelphia-based youth organizations, continuing to deepen his relationship with the city.
The following weekend, Maxey hosted another family-focused basketball camp in Dallas, featuring a free golf clinic for local youth. Between the two events, Maxey hosted more than 700 youths.
“It’s such an honor to receive the NBA Cares Community Assist Award for the offseason. I’m grateful to even be in a position to make a difference in the lives of Philadelphia- and Dallas-area youth,” Maxey said. “I believe in the power of education and sports to transform lives and am committed to supporting our youth as they pursue their dreams. Thank you to the NBA for this recognition, and to everyone who has supported the Tyrese Maxey Foundation along the way.”
Giving back to the community is a core aspect of who Tyrese Maxey is. Earlier this summer, Maxey told Philly Sports Network why giving back to the community is so important to him:
“One of my biggest things is always trying to give back to the community and give back to families… I like to shed light on people, bring light on people, as far as brightening up their days. I think I can do that… not just brighten up their day, but maybe brighten up someone’s week.”
The Philadelphia 76ers will recognize Tyrese Maxey as the NBA Cares Bob Lanier Community Assist Award winner on Wednesday, Oct. 23, when the team will present him with the Bob Lanier trophy during a special celebration prior to tipoff against the Milwaukee Bucks in the season opener at The Center.
