*Update

After further testing, it has been determined that Sixers rookie Jared McCain is not displaying concussion symptoms. A Sixers rep informed media members of McCain’s status and gave an update on his availability for the preseason finale in Orlando on Friday:

“Jared McCain was reevaluated this afternoon. He has been diagnosed with a pulmonary contusion and has not displayed symptoms consistent with a concussion. He is out tomorrow vs. Orlando and will be evaluated daily.”

During the Sixers‘ Wednesday night matchup against the Brooklyn Nets, Jared McCain took a hard fall while contesting for an offensive rebound. The moments immediately following were unsettling and worrisome as McCain began viciously coughing and attempting to seemingly catch his breath.

After some time, McCain was helped off the floor by members of the Sixers’ medical staff and immediately left the game to head into the locker room.

After the game, Nick Nurse informed the media that McCain was headed to the hospital, and an additional update would be given when available.

Thursday morning, that update came through.

A representative of the Sixers informed media members of McCain’s status:

“Jared McCain was discharged from the hospital early this morning and is at home resting. He will be further evaluated later today and an update will be provided as appropriate.”

Simultaniously, NBA Insider Chris Haynes reported an additional update, stating that McCain experienced pulmonary contusions following the fall, which led to the symptoms he dealt with on the court immediately following.

Typically, pulmonary contusions can keep someone in the hospital for days at a time, so it should be taken as a good sign for McCain. The potential for a concussion or other injuries still looms, but for now, McCain is home, and the first battle is won.

More updates will be made available as they are known.
