Can the Eagles expect a big boost from the return of Sydney Brown?

Eagles safety Sydney Brown was riding high on New Year’s Eve after his amazing 99-yard interception touchdown return versus Arizona. The score put the Eagles up 14–3 with a little under 12 minutes left of the first half. Everything finally was favoring the Eagle’s, and Sydney’s way. Until it wasn’t.

The Eagles would lose this contest and a week later in the regular season finale against the NY Giants, Sydney tore the ACL in his right knee.

Understanding the gravity of the moment he called his confidant and best friend, his twin brother, Chase Brown, running back of the Cincinnati Bengals.

Sydney stated emotions were running high as the realization that he would miss not only the playoffs but that he could miss a large portion of the Eagles’ 2024 season as well. He stated that he had a moment in the locker room where he shed some tears. Then Brown spoke with Big Dom DiSandro, who encouraged him to be positive and that a positive outcome would follow.

Sydney accepted the advice and attacked his rehab, intending to return on the shortest end of the projected timescale.

“From that moment on, I had my time to grieve about it, I had a plan of when I wanted to be back, what I was going to do. In my mind where I wanted to be at a certain points of the process”

Sydney was marked as a full participant at practice on Wednesday and it appears likely that he could play this Sunday.

The irony his first game back would happen to be in New York, where he was injured ten months ago is not lost. He would be returning faster than everyone thought, except Sydney.

The Heart of a Champion

Sydney attacked his rehab just like he did the playbook during his rookie season. He also impressed everyone within the Eagles’ organization this year as much as he did last. Last season he described how he went about learning the playbook so quickly.

“You’ve got to simplify it, attack it, study, study, study until it’s unconscious competence.”

His relentless practice habits impressed his teammates and coaches. His desire and skill set are reasons why Sydney was a red-star prospect for the Eagles.

Chuck Walls, the Eagle’s Director of Player Personnel, shared some insight into their evaluation of Sydney.

“He’s powerful. When he closes ground, he can uncoil from his hips. He can really put force through contact and for a guy who is built the way he is (5-foot-10, 194 pounds), he can really move his feet. I spent a lot of time with him in the pre-draft process. He did very well in interviews, he was very sharp, he came across as very diligent, he’s very time-oriented. He’s a wonderful young man who is a really great teammate who was a Captain this year. He loves the game and you can see that on tape.”

Eagles General Manager Howie Roseman also shared his thoughts.

“Sydney Brown was a passion player for a lot of people in this organization. He was a red-star guy. And I think just a tremendous person with obviously really good athletic tools, leadership ability, and for us, just excited to get him in the building.”

This season was the same desire and drive but focused on rehabbing.

Return of the Eagles “Red Star” Safety

Sydney does not know the role he will play when he returns, but he is excited and welcoming the opportunity to get on the field and show the world what he learned while overcoming the challenges from his injury. Both physically and mentally. He also surprised a lot of people when he stated that if he could go back in time, he would choose to tear his ACL again.

“I would tear the heck out of my ACL again because of all the lessons of perseverance, overcoming mental fatigue, the way I embraced the entire grind of it. Being tough. Being smart about the process and doing my job every single day to make sure that I am going to be a better player when I touch the field again”

Talk about making lemonade when life gives you lemons, Sydney embodies that phrase.

That is one of the reasons why he was a “red-star guy” and why the Eagles fanbase is so excited to see him on the field again.
