Wednesday night brought the Brooklyn Nets to Philadelphia for a preseason matchup against the Sixers. Despite the offense looking like a well-paced, well-oiled machine and the team’s win, the biggest story coming out of the night was the injury suffered by Sixers rookie Jared McCain.
Late in the game, roughly halfway through the fourth quarter, McCain fell hard while battling for an offensive rebound. It wasn’t difficult to see that he was shaken up after the fall. Members of the Sixers’ medical staff rushed over to McCain’s aid. After a prolonged moment, McCain got to his feet with the help of the medical staff and was aided by them to the locker room.
A scary sight, certainly.
Following the game, the Sixers sent media members in attendance the following message:
“Jared McCain is being evaluated by medical staff following the fall, including for a concussion. Further updates as appropriate.”
Nick Nurse later addressed the media, touching on several topics. Notably, Nurse was asked about the status of McCain, giving additional details on the young Sixer:
“It was rough. You got the report; he’s going to the hospital to get checked out. Obviously, [he] was having some trouble breathing there. I thought he maybe got the wind knocked out of him, but [I’m] not sure what was going on there, but [I’ve] never quite seen one like that before. So let’s hope he’s okay, and we’ll see what the report is from the hospital.”
Nurse was also asked about the various injuries the team has already seen throughout the preseason, including a potential second injury to Tyrese Maxey that turned out not to be such:
“I don’t think we’ve played those guys a ton, right? We’ve tried to schedule it so we could get a look at some people and a lot of people and all those kind of things. I mean, they’re a couple of freak injuries. It’s not because they’re playing too many minutes or any of that kind of stuff. So just unlucky, and hopefully get all that unluckiness out of the way and move forward.”
The Sixers still have one more preseason game, heading down to Orlando on Friday for a matchup against the Orlando Magic. Joel Embiid, Paul George, and, more than likely, Jared McCain will all miss the preseason finale.
