The Philadelphia Flyers continued their road trip out west for their third game of the season against the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers lost in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals this past season and had gone 0-3 to start this season. However, last night, the Oilers managed to get their first win in overtime. As for Philadelphia, a star was shining brightly on the ice.

Flyers vs Oilers recap

Heading into this contest, defenseman Travis Sanheim laced up to skate in his 500th career NHL game. The initial puck drop was set for 10 p.m. but was pushed back another 20 minutes because the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild game took longer than expected due to ESPN’s doubleheader.

Luckily, once the puck dropped, it didn’t take long for Matvei Michkov to impact the ice. The Flyers went on many power plays throughout the first 20 minutes, and Michkov capitalized. The first goal of the rookie’s NHL career was underwhelming due to an official review, which indicated the puck crossed the line, followed by an Edmonton coach’s challenge on goaltender interference on Stuart Skinner, which was denied.

Luckily, it didn’t take wrong for Michkov to get the celebration he deserved as he banked another puck behind Skinner on the power play, giving Philadelphia a 2-0 lead heading into the second frame.

However, in the second frame, the Oilers decided to show up and scored two goals, one each from Adam Henrique and Connor Brown. With the game now tied 2-2, Bobby Brink regained the Flyers’ lead heading into the final frame. Unfortunately, with under four minutes remaining in the contest, Edmonton’s Evan Bouchard was able to give the Oilers extra life by getting the puck behind Sam Ersson.

The game went into overtime, and it took under a minute for Leon Draisaitl to score to put the game to rest. The Oilers defeated Philadelphia 4-3 in OT, which means Philadelphia came out of the game with one point. While the Flyers were dominant early on, the Oilers have some of the best talents in the league With Jett Luchanko playing his second career game, the bench boss had a few words about how he handled himself against Connor McDavid: “Jett made some outstanding plays. I love his speed. Played against McDavid tonight and wasn’t intimidated.”

Philadelphia concludes their four-game road trip on Thursday for another 10 pm puck drop, taking on the Seattle Kraken. The Flyers return to home ice Saturday as they host the Canucks for their final meeting this season.
