The Philadelphia 76ers are going to Atlanta to face the Hawks on Monday night, the third game of a preseason road trip. The Sixers were notably not joined by superstar Joel Embiid on this road trip, as he had a previously scheduled checkup on the knee he injured last season, but the possibility of him making his preseason debut remained, at least until Sunday afternoon.
A Sixers rep provided an update on Embiid to Philly Sports Network on Sunday, in which they disclosed that the assessment Embiid underwent on Thursday went as expected and that the former MVP is “progressing well” but that he will miss the rest of the preseason as a part of an “individual treatment plan designed to best support his health and wellness for the 2024-25 season.”
Obviously, this is deflating news for Sixers fans, but it’s important that what is being said is clear. The Sixers did not say that Embiid had a setback. They did not say that he’s knee is not progressing. They did not say that this would impact his ability in the long term.
According to the Sixers, this is all purely preventative in the interest of maintaining Embiid’s health long-term, specifically for the postseason.
The Sixers have also informed PSN that further updates will be provided as appropriate, so stay tuned.
