According to Tom Pelissero, the Philadelphia Eagles have claimed former Raiders DT, Byron Young, off waivers.
Eagles claim underdog Byron Young off waivers
The Eagles have just completed the formation of their 53-man roster where they decided to keep 6 defensive tackles. This is a little more than usual, with Moro Ojomo, Marlon Tuipolotu, and Thomas Booker IV all making the cut behind the trio of Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and Milton Williams.
With this in mind, the addition of another DT comes as a surprise, but Howie Roseman has never been one to shy away from value.
Young was selected 70th overall by Las Vegas back in 2023, but played in just 6 games following an injury-plagued start to his NFL career. There were high hopes for his progress in year 2 and his preseason wasn’t exactly awful, with the Alabama product registering 3 tackles, a sack, and a PBU. But that wasn’t enough to convince a refreshed Raiders’ brass that he was worthy of a roster spot.
During his time at Alabama, Young tallied 7.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups, and 130 total tackles across 4 seasons. He comes in at 6’3, 292 lbs, and is more of a leaner pass-rusher than a typical nose tackle, something that might lend itself nicely to Fangio’s system.
This could end up being a steal for the Eagles, but at worst it’s a low-risk, high-reward punt that adds more bulk to a position that is always in need of extra reinforcement.
