NFL Football insider Ian Rappaport tweeted earlier today that Eagles WR Ainias Smith felt discomfort in his ankle and hamstring following the team’s last preseason game on Saturday and may miss the start of the season. He and the team await an MRI to determine his status.
Eagles wideout Ainias Smith could be placed on IR to start the season
Ainias fought through early injuries since he was drafted and was pressing too much throughout camp, but recently started stringing together some good practices and play on the field.
He had a nice 2-point conversion in the second preseason game and made some plays versus the Vikings, hauling in 6 grabs for 36 yards. This was the most action he has had all summer. Ainias also added a nice 14-yard punt return.
Smith was drafted in the 5th round out of Texas A&M. Standing 5’9 and weighing 190 pounds. Believe it or not, he is the shortest receiver Howie Roseman has ever drafted!
Smith was a versatile player in college as a receiver who offered plenty of special teams upside to the Aggies, which gives the Eagles some potential with the new kickoff rules. He plays quickly, has an elusive skillset, and is a menace with the ball in his hands.
The Eagles, and Ainias, were excited to see him on the field as a kick returner. But that time may be somewhere in the future pending the results of the MRI.
If the Eagles place him on IR, they will have to wait at least 4 weeks before he can be activated back on the active roster.
