The Philadelphia Eagles were able to eke out a win over the Baltimore Ravens in preseason play last night and there is plenty for fans to chew on after the game. Here are 13 things we learned about the Eagles in their opening preseason affair.

Eagles offense

Britain Covey is one of the best punt returners in the game and has some juice as a receiver. He finished the night with 4 receptions on 4 targets good for 25 yards. Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni has stated that WR3 could be a blend of a few players. Covey is positioning himself to stay in that competition.

Nobody understands the new kick-return rules very well. The announcers fumbled their way through trying to explain all night. Despite all of the hype about how different the rules would have an impact, the Eagles only averaged 22.3 yards per return. It is only one week. The rule change should be exciting long term.

Johnny Wilson is a vicious blocker being used in a myriad of ways. Bubble screens were showcased last night, with the team looking to see how best to get him involved. While Wilson only hauled in 1 reception for 7 yards in his first game as an Eagle, he had a positive impact on the offense all night. His unique blend of size and speed is special and the Eagles looked to find ways to keep him involved.

Will Shipley had an exciting grab that was good for a 7-yard touchdown. His speed and desire to make plays were on display. If he can improve his pass-pro, he will end up with some meaningful snaps this season.

John Ross was up and down and will need a better showing to make the roster. His struggles off the line are certainly going to pose some questions for a team looking for some extra speed, especially with Britain Covey doing so well.

Mekhi Becton versus Tyler Steen may come down to an opening-day decision. Steen looked solid against the run but there were some clear weaknesses in his pass-protection reps. It will be interesting to see how the battle progresses over the next week.

Eagles 5th-round draft pick Ainias Smith is struggling and I wonder if he is still fighting through an injury. Unless he is placed on IR, his chances of staying with the team could be via the practice squad.

Grant Calcatarra showed off some of the ability that he had all summer. The battle for Tight End 3 may need another outside addition.

Defense

Jeremiah Trotter Jr.’s instincts shone last night. Axe-man Junior had quite a debut, with the rookie amassing 6 tackles a QB hit and a sack. When he unleashes his father’s patented celebration at Lincoln Financial Field, there is going to be hysteria.

Nolan Smith is going to make an impact, faster & stronger. He finished the night with 4 tackles, a sack, and a TFL (tackle for loss).

Patrick Johnson has gone under the radar mist of training camp but was not unnoticed in the pre-season game. Many had questioned if he would make the 53-man roster, but after contributing with 4 tackles and a sack, it is safe to write that he is still fighting for a job.

Quinyon Mitchell played inside-outside and almost had an interception. He looks set to make a significant impact as a rookie.

Jalyx Hunt is fast, crafty, aggressive, & underrated. He showed off every one of his pre-draft traits tonight. Jalyx had 4 tackles in a solid debut.
