17 things we’ve learned during recent Eagles Training Camp practices

The Philadelphia Eagles hosted another Training Camp Practice down at the NovaCare Complex on Monday, and our writer David Neisz was on-site to take in the action. Here’s everything he noted.

Eagles offense

Despite Jalen Hurts learning another system and working with a new OC, he has a command of the offense. He looked sharp with every throw. Short, outside, over the middle, intermediate, and deep balls. He also looks a lot faster when he takes off running. Jalen has the tools and talent to make a run for league MVP.

Jason Kelce was at the Eagles’ Training Camp on Monday, fresh from enjoying the Olympics in Paris. He has been around the team a lot this summer and spent some of that time with Cam Jurgens. The legendary center appeared to be giving Jurgens tips between practice reps. Kelce repeatedly walked over to Cam placed a hand on his shoulder and shared some of his Hall Of Fame wisdom. The Eagles have invested a lot in the success of Jurgens, and Kelce is doing all he can to ensure that his successor has every bit of knowledge he can share.

Rookie wideout Johnny Wilson has continued to get first-team reps. He made a nice TD grab over Kelee Ringo in the red zone on Monday and continues to shine. The hype around him to be WR3 is real. Jalen Hurts has shouted him out a couple of times post-practice. Wilson is taking advantage of the extra reps while Parris Campbell is out by impressing the coaching staff and making the most of his opportunities.

Britain Covey is catching everything thrown his way. After creating separation, he hauled in a long pass versus Avonte Maddox who could not contain the shifty receiver. He might be the most improved receiver from last season. He is fighting for a role as WR3.

Anim Dankwah is massive. He has the size the Eagles and Jeff Stoutland look for in developing OTs. He is listed at 6 foot 7′ and 330 lbs but appears even larger when you see him next to the other linemen on the field. The product from Howard will be exciting to watch develop.

Grant Calcatara is going to be the Eagles TE2. He caught everything thrown his way, again. He has made major strides from last season.

Mekhi Becton had 1st team reps at RG on Monday while Tyler Steen did not appear to participate in team drills. Tyler needs to get healthy soon to get back into the fight. There is still time for him to take the job, but nobody can win a position from the sideline.

As the saying goes “You can’t make the club in the tub”

Eagles defense

Cooper DeJean was on the practice field (not practicing with the team) and I was a little surprised by how big he was. He is pretty jacked. I am excited to see what he does when he finally gets practice reps and into a game.

CB Shon Stephens looked good when he got on the field and the Eagles seem pleased with his progress. He appears destined to earn a role on the practice squad.

Reggie White Lurie, the dog, made an appearance. Reggie is entering his third season as Director of Joy for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Nakobe Dean easily ran over Wil Shipley for a “sack”. He also got to Hurts Sunday on a blitz. He has shined attacking downhill but will need to improve his coverage skills quickly if he is to wrestle the starting job away from Zack Baun.

Jordan Davis had some strong reps versus the run and against the pass on Monday. He “tackled” Saquon Barkley in the end zone for a would-be safety and got past LG Landon Dickerson for a “sack” on Jalen Hurts for his 2nd. The Eagles need an impact season from Jordan, and thus far he is looking the part.

Jeremiah Trotter Jr looked great on both Sunday and Monday and has done well when given 1st team reps. He’s looked very sold versus the run. Many thought his only impact with the team in 2024 would be via special teams. I would not be surprised if he gets on the field and plays meaningful snaps as an LB this year.

Moro Ojomo appears ahead of Marlon Tuipulotu and is fighting for significant playing time. He looks like a player who could have a breakout season and move up the depth chart. He was disruptive and played with an edge. He has the talent and attitude to be a fan favorite.

Bryce Huff looked great in coverage but needs to generate more pressure as a pass rusher. The Eagles are counting on a big season from Huff and he needs to deliver for them to make a deep playoff run.

Milton Williams has been hard to contain all summer. It would be prudent to sign Milton to a contract extension sooner rather than later. He appears to be on the verge of a breakout season.

Ben VanSumeren had some first-team LB reps and is taking full advantage of the extra playing time with Oren Burks out. He is making a strong push to be a member of the 53-man roster.
