The Philadelphia Phillies tied an MLB record and broke another when their eighth All-Star selection – fifth pitcher – was announced. Cristopher Sánchez got the nod as a replacement player to push the number into record-setting territory. After Alec Bohm put on a surprise show in the first round of the Homerun Derby the night prior, it was time to get to the Midsummer Classic.
All-Star game 2024: A Phillies-related recap
Six of the eight players actually stayed available for the action, as Zach Wheeler and Ranger Suárez decided to sit the game out for rest and recovery. Bohm and two of his teammates – Bryce Harper and Trea Turner – were voted starters for the National League so their appearances were guaranteed. The pitchers weren’t guaranteed, but National League manager Arizona Diamondbacks manager, Torey Lovullo, was hopeful he would get everyone on his roster an appearance.
Let’s see how the Philly Six performed in the 2024 MLB All-Star Game.
Trea Turner
Turner was appearing in his third All-Star Game, and his first as a Phillie. He would finish his night going 1-for-3 at the plate. His one hit was a single in third inning, right after a three-run shot off the bat of Shohei Ohtani to give the NL a 3-0 lead. He would not score.
One of the cooler moments of the night involved Turner and his glove work. Before recording his hit, the NL shortstop made a slick play while he and his Fightin’ teammates were mic’d up. You got to hear a live reaction from a few guys who truly love their teammate and it made for beautiful television.
The broadcast team said it might be the best play in history by a player who was on mic – and I can’t disagree,
Bryce Harper
Tuesday night was Harper’s eighth time being named an All-Star. Despite this being his sixth season with Philly and his second time being named to the team since donning the red pinstripes, it’s just the first time he got to appear in the game with a Phillies hat on. He too went 1-for-3 before being lifted for a defensive sub to start the bottom of the sixth.
Harper’s hit was an opposite-field double down the line in the game’s first frame. It marked the first hit in an All-Star game for the Phillies first baseman since 2017. He recorded a single in that game, also in the first inning. His double was also the first extra-base hit he’s recorded in the ASG since 2016 when he ripped a double off of former Phillie great Cole Hamels. Tonight’s double put two runners in scoring position with two outs, but neither would cross the plate.
Despite his seven games getting at-bats in the summer exhibition, Harper has yet to score a run in the All-Star Game.
Alec Bohm
Bohm became one of the coolest guys in the league during the Home Run Derby with his impressive first-round performance and comments caught on a live microphone. He was a first-timer in the midsummer classic. Bohm, just like his teammates, finished with one hit – although he only stepped to the plate twice before being swapped for an NL teammate.
Bohm singled off White Sox starter Garrett Crochet in inning No. 4. All three Phillies hitters in the game recorded a hit – the first time three different player representing Philadelphia did so in the ASG.
Cristopher Sánchez
Sánchez, another first-timer, was the last Phillies player named to the National League team. His performance out of the NL pen was as efficient as humanly possible. Two pitches to start the sixth inning, and two outs recorded. That’s all he needed. In an effort to get as many players in the game as possible, he was still pulled with two outs in the sixth despite the low pitch count.
Matt Strahm
Strahm was named to his first All-Star team this year, his ninth season in the majors. Strahm threw more than double the number of pitches of his teammate the inning before. It took the long-haired lefty just five pitches (all strikes) to strike out HR Derby runner-up, Bobby Witt Jr. from the Kansas City Royals.
This was the only batter he faced.
Jeff Hoffman
Hoffman is in the same boat at Strahm – his ninth season and his first time being an All-Star. He induced a ground out of the Twins’ WIlli Castro on four pitches. Castro was the only batter he faced.
Overall, Phillies hitters went 3-for-8 with two singles and a double. Their pitchers recorded 1.1 IP on 11 total pitches. Strahm recorded the only K of Philly’s trio.
The American League was victorious in the game, 5 to 3. Phillies sent the most players to the 2024 edition of the All-Star Game, and their reps had a solid day all-around.
