NHL Odds: The NHL offseason is now in full swing. With the draft done and dusted, development camps underway, and free agency open, the dog days of hockey summer are here.

But despite no NHL action until the pre-season begins in September, it’s never too early to take a peek at some odds for the 2024-25 season.

Michkov leads Calder Trophy odds

The termination of Matvei Michkov’s KHL contract caused shockwaves throughout Philadelphia. After being drafted seventh overall during the 2023 NHL Draft, it was expected that Michkov wouldn’t make the jump over to North America until the 2026-27 season.

However, SKA Saint Petersburg released Michkov in June, and Philadelphia Flyers general manager Daniel Briere signed the 19-year-old top prospect to a three-year entry-level contract on July 1. Michkov will officially suit up for the Flyers in 2024-25.

Although he didn’t attend Flyers Development Camp last week, Michkov will be in attendance for training camp. Michkov owns the potential to be an NHL superstar. He’s the most popular Flyers prospect since Eric Lindros, and there is good reason for the hype to be as loud as it is. Michkov headlines the Flyers’ “new era of orange,” and his impact will be felt instantly.

His early arrival to the NHL has changed the Calder Trophy odds for 2024-25. If Michkov remained in the KHL, it’s almost certain that San Jose Sharks forward and recent first-overall pick, Macklin Celebrini, would be at the top of the table. Now, Michkov is leading the race. While everything has yet to be seen, the 2024-25 season looks like it will have the potential to live up to the electric 2023-24 season that was full of constant headlines. Along with Michkov and Celebrini, there are loads of other talented prospects to keep an eye on in what will be a thrilling Calder Trophy race.
