Tonight on ESPN the All-Star starters for the 2024 Major League Baseball All-Star game.
Heading into the announcement, it was revealed that Phillies’ first baseman Bryce Harper would automatically get the starting nod. This was earned due to having the most votes amongst NL players. During the live feed, it was revealed that Trea Turner and Alec Bohm would also be All-Star starters.
Brandon Marsh, Kyle Schwarber, and Nick Castellanos were all finalists but were not elected as a starter.
This is Harper’s 8th nomination to the All-Star game and his second as a Phillie. If healthy, it will be the first time Bryce plays in the game as a member of the Phillies. This is Turner’s third nomination and his first as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies. It will be the first time that Alec Bohm has been selected for the mid-summer classic.
In 2023, the Phillies sent Craig Kimbrel and Nick Castellanos as representatives.
The Starting 3
The Phillies’ infield will be shining in the All-Star game this season.
With Bryce, Trea, and Alec all revealed as starters, they will get a chance to play together in this game. A lot of times, the All-Star game features new matchups that you might not normally see. Aside from second base, it will be routine for the Phils.
Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte will get the start for the National League. Marte will be joined by his manager Torey Lovullo. The reigning NL Champions send their manager and staff to the game. We saw this last year with Rob Thomson and back in 2009 and 2010 with Charlie Manuel.
It is the first time since 1982 that the Phillies have had 3 All-Star starters.
Other Phillies All-Stars
There is potential for more Phillies to be on the All-Star team this season.
JT Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber are two more offensive players for the club that could potentially make the team. Realmuto lost the fan voting to William Contreras and Schwarber lost to Shohei Ohtani.
On the other side of the ball, however, there are plenty of options. Zack Wheeler should be a near-lock to make the team again this season. He earned the nod with the Phillies for the first time in 2021.
Both Ranger Suarez and Cristopher Sanchez should have a great opportunity to make the team as well. They both have been amongst the best pitchers in all of baseball this season. Wheeler, Sanchez, and Suarez are deserving of the honor.
The Phillies could potentially send a member of their bullpen to Texas as well for this game. Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman have been stellar this season. While usually closers often are the ones who make the All-Star team, it could be a member of the Phillies’ committee in the ‘pen.
