Phillies vs Mets: Pitching preview
Ranger Suarez (9-1, 1.70 ERA) vs Sean Mannea (3-2, 3.63 ERA)
The big news out of Philadelphia this weekend is that Ranger Suarez will be pitching today. One of the biggest breakout stars of 2024, Suarez was uncertain prior to the trip to London after sustaining a thumb injury last week. He practiced on Friday and told reporters that he’s feeling good, doubling down on Rob Thompson’s confidence that he would be ready to go.
Suarez starting here is huge. The international games at this stadium typically yield a lot of runs due to the more ‘closed’ nature of the roof. We’ll touch more on that later, but if there’s ever a time for someone as dominant as Suarez to make his presence felt, it’s at London Stadium.
Across from the 28-year-old will be Sean Mannea, who struggled last time out, allowing 6 runs against the Diamondbacks. Mannea has only allowed 4+ runs in two games this season, but with the Phils’ offense looking red-hot and this stadium’s nature to provide a wave of high-octane offense, this could well be another tough day at the office.
Phillies vs Mets: Betting preview
The Phillies are favored to win the opening game of this series and with good reason. The Fightin’s are 3-1 against New York this season and have been firing in runs at a historic rate this year. It’s going to be difficult for the Mets to do much damage if Suarez is back to his best, and given how London has looked these past few days, this could well end up being a home-game atmosphere for the Phillies. I like the Phils to cover the spread here.

As I mentioned earlier, London Stadium has a strange habit of providing offensive masterclasses. The reason for this is that the stadium is relatively closed, with a roof covering the grandstands. Unlike most ballparks where it’s open air, a ball being pounded at West Ham’s home ground means that the air can’t really get under it as it would in typical ballparks to slow it down or hold it up. As a result, just look at the scoring we’ve seen here in recent years:

The total here is 10, which is a very solid pick, but I think it’s much more profitable to back individual batter props for big hitters. Guys like Bryce Harper, who leads the Phillies in home runs, should have a field day in London, and is +390 to record a home-run. Alec Bohm sits at +400 and there’s some real value on Bryson Stott’s +900 line. Backing any of the Phils to knock one into the stands feels like a smart play if recent history is anything to go by.
