Another weekend, another matchday for Marlon LeBlanc and his Union II side, and this weekend sees them on the road again as they travel to the bright lights of New York to take on Red Bulls II.
Union II @ Red Bulls II
Union II returned to MLS Next Pro action last weekend after serving their 2nd bye week of the season. They face a road trip to face New England Revolution II and Chris Donovan made sure the team was coming back with all 3 points after scoring his 2nd brace of the season. Olwethu Makhanya added the other in a 3-1, the first-ever goal the defender has scored since he arrived in Philly.
With the win on their return to MLS Next Pro action, Marlon LeBlanc’s side climbed to the top of the table on goal difference and that’s where they currently sit going into the game in New York.
Red Bulls II season so far
NYRB II has had a very good start to the season, currently sitting in 4th place and just 3 points of Union II. They’ve had a tough time of it recently, especially after the last time these two teams played each other, they’re coming off a 2-game-losing streak, after a 2-1 away loss to Orlando and then a 4-1 battering at home to FC Cincinnati last Sunday.
The main reason NYRB II has fallen off in the past few weeks is because of the massive loss they suffered when league-leading goal scorer Roald Mitchell suffered a season-ending knee injury. The young forward had eight goals in the few games he managed before the injury, and since they lost him, NYRB II has only scored 5 goals in 5 games and sits with a 1-3-1 record.
Another interesting little bit about NYRB II is their home and away record, normally clubs have really good home form and then their away form is really the game changer in terms of how your season ends up. NYRB II is the opposite of that, they have an incredible 4-1-1 away record but have yet to manage to win at home this season.
A heated history
These two teams have quite the history between them heading into this one, Union II is currently undefeated in the MLS Next Pro against NYRB II and it’ll be the 2nd time these two have faced off against each other this season, after playing back in late April.
Steven Sserwadda put NYRB II up 1-0 early on but after Frankie Westfield found Eddy Davis in the box, the game was tied 1-1 and headed to an extra point shootout where Olney, Tucker, Ngabo, and Westfield all converted their spotkicks for an extra point shootout win of 4-2.
The game is set to kick off at 5 pm ET from MSU Soccer Park and will be, like last week’s game, broadcasted for free on the MLS Next Pro website, no need for an Apple TV or MLS Season Pass subscription.
