Phillies vs Padres: A 5-0 win over the Reds last time out helped the Phillies win their third consecutive series. They’ll be looking to carry that momentum into a 3-game set against the Padres, who are 5-5 in their last 10 games.

Phillies vs Padres: Pitching preview
Aaron Nola (3-1, 3.16 ERA) vs Joe Musgrove (3-2, 5.74 ERA)
This pitching matchup promises to be an enthralling one. Aaron Nola takes the mound for Philadelphia on the back out of his best outing of the year. Nola went 8 innings deep against the White Sox last time out, giving up just 2 runs and 4 hits. After giving up 7 runs in his opening start of the season, he’s steadied the ship in a big way. Nola has only surrendered 5 runs in 26 innings pitched since then and looks poised to try and halt a Padres offense ranking 3rd in batting average over their last 3 games.
Across from Nola will be Joe Musgrove, who also got off to a rocky start. While he’s allowed no more than 5 runs this season, 37 hits in 31 innings isn’t the kind of metric that the Padres need. He’s also struck out fewer than 3 batters on 4 occasions this season, which should present the Phillies with some opportunities to capitalize.
Phillies vs Padres: Betting preview
The Phillies are picking up steam and quickly. They are now 8-2 in their last 10 and sit 10th in league batting average. With Musgrove struggling to strike batters out consistently, i really don’t mind backing the Phillies here, knowing that Aaron Nola has enough in the tank to keep the Padres quiet.
Betting pick: Philadelphia Phillies -112
Prop bet fun
The obvious play for me is betting under 5.5 Joe Musgrove strikeouts. The Phillies rank 16th in strikeouts this season, but 9th in hits. Musgrove hasn’t exactly faced the cream of the crop yet, with the 31-year-old only eclipsing this line twice all year. The Blue Jays rank 21st in batting average and he was only able to strike out 3, as he did against the Brewers (3rd) and Giants (11th). There’s no reason for that trend to be bucked tonight.
