It’s been a busy offseason for the Philadelphia Eagles and the pace is only picking up. The team revealed on Monday afternoon that it has signed Reed Blankenship to a one-year contract extension.
Reed Blankenship
Reed Blankenship has gone from zero to hero in Philadelphia. After catching on as an undrafted free agent in 2022, the Middle Tennessee product was thrown into a starting role when Chauncey Gardner-Johnson picked up an injury.
He made 4 starts that season while also becoming a key figure in the playoffs, recording 1 interception and 34 tackles when performing in a pinch, playing in 10 games overall.
Blankenship flashed enough upside to be given a full-time starting role in 2023. He played 89% of defensive snaps last season, recording 113 tackles and 3 interceptions while establishing himself as a stronghold in an otherwise struggling secondary.
What does this mean for the Eagles?
The good news is that there is some stability at Safety now. Both Blankenship and the returning Chauncey Gardner-Johnson are on the roster through 2025 which gives Vic Fangio a solid pairing to build around.
There is something to be said for Blankenship’s current ability. He’s obviously not the same level as CJGJ and the Eagles may want to add an insurance policy in the way of a proven veteran to work in behind the young Safety, but it’s very clear that his trajectory is only pointing upwards and Howie Roseman is keen to recognize that and ensure his development continues in the City of Brotherly Love.
