After months of speculation, the Philadelphia Eagles have officially traded away Hasson Reddick. Philadelphia will send the star edge rusher to the New York Jets in exchange for a conditional 2026 third-round pick that can become a second-rounder, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The pick would officially become a second-rounder if Reddick plays 67.5 percent of the team’s defensive snaps or has ten or more sacks in the season. Either way, it does at least appear likely that Philadelphia will get a second-round pick out of this deal.
The pick being pushed out to 2026 is also significant as the Jets will be led by then-42-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is currently slated to hold a $51.5 million cap hit. The Jets may be all in for this season, but their outlook beyond 2025 is a bit murky.
If the selection becomes a top 45 pick in the draft, then this deal will be looked back on as one of quality value for Philadelphia. But, if the worst case plays out, Philadelphia just dealt a perennial 10+ sack artist for a third-round pick two years out.
Reddick, a Camden, New Jersey native, was elated to come to the neighboring city of Philadelphia and play for the team he rooted for as a child. It’s truly a shame that the situation became what it was as Reddick pursued a new deal, and the Eagles refused to budge. As they say, money talks and while Reddick does not have a contract extension in play with New York as of this moment, he is no worse off as he prepares to enter free agency in 2025.
In just two seasons in Philadelphia, Reddick amassed 27 sacks, which ranks 22nd all-time in Eagles franchise history.
The question now becomes what Philadelphia will do on the outside of the defensive line. They restructured Josh Sweat’s deal earlier this offseason, guaranteeing his return, and the team also signed Jets pass rusher Bryce Huff. They also are still vocal public believers in 2023 first-round pick Nolan Smith, who is expected to see an expanded role this season.
Even still, it’s not unrealistic to suggest that the odds of the Eagles selecting a pass rusher with one of their three picks in the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft increased significantly after this deal.
One more important detail of note: The Jets will also be taking one $14.5 million of Reddick’s contract while the Eagles will assume his $1 million roster bonus that was postponed earlier this offseason.
With this new cap space opened up, Philadelphia may have another major move on the horizon. Perhaps even a reunion between a notable free agent and new Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
